NBA Wrap

Tim Duncan nailed 24 points and snared nine rebounds and Tony Parker added 19 points as the San Antonio Spurs rolled to a 104-76 win over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, leveling their Western conference quarterfinal a game each.

The best-of-seven series now shifts from San Antonio to Denver for Game Three on Saturday.

With Duncan labeling game two a must win, the Spurs rebounded from their first game loss in style, making nine of their first 10 shots and leading by 31 at the half.

After a sub par performance in the opener, shooting just 7-of-22, Duncan was back in his MVP form -- missing just four shots from the field.

"Everyone came out focused and knew the game play," said Duncan, a twice NBA MVP. "When we do that...we're tough to beat."

The Nuggets lacked the energy and intensity they displayed in the opener and appeared content to return home to Denver with the split, shooting just 36 percent from the floor.

In contrast, the Spurs played with a sense of purpose, Parker scoring 12 points in the first quarter matching his total contribution from Game One.

Argentine Manu Ginobili contributed 17 points to the Spurs cause off the bench and Brent Barry chipped in with 16.

The Nuggets had only three players in double figures, DerMarr Johnson leading the way with a modest 12 points while Andre Miller had 11 and Carmelo Anthony 10.

In Phoenix, Amare Stoudemire, Shawn Marion and Steve Nash all had double-doubles as the Suns fought off the determined Memphis Grizzlies to claim a 108-103 win and a 2-0 lead in their Western conference quarterfinal.

The best-of-seven series now moves to Memphis for Game Three on Friday.

Stoudemire had a game high 34 points and 10 rebounds, while Marion scored 22 and 13 and Nash hit for 12 while dishing out 15 assists for the top ranked Suns, who got all they could handle from the eighth seeded Grizzlies.

Joe Johnson added 20 points and Quentin Richardson chipped in with 15 points.

Spain's Pau Gasol led the Grizzlies with 28 points and 16 rebounds and Jason Williams hit for 21, but will still return to Memphis searching for the franchise's first ever playoff win.

In Chicago, Kirk Hinrich poured in a career high 34 points, including 21 in the fourth quarter, and Antonio Davis added 18 to power the Bulls to a 113-103 win over the Washington Wizards and a 2-0 lead in their Eastern conference quarterfinal.

The best-of-seven series now shifts to the U.S. capital for game three on Saturday.

Hinrich, who has often played in the shadow of Bulls rookie of the year candidate Ben Gordon, had the spotlight in game two, making 12-of-15 shots -- including 5-for-5 three-pointers.

Gordon had 14 points while Argentine Andres Nocioni contributed 10 points and seven rebounds to the Chicago cause.

The Bulls took control of the contest in the third quarter going on a 10-2 run to surge ahead 71-60, taking the 11 point lead into the final frame.

Gilbert Arenas had a game high 39 for the Wizards, while Larry Hughes had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wizards return home to the MCI Center with plenty of work to do, having not won a playoff series since 1982.

Pacers Even Series With Celtics

Reggie Miller and the Indiana Pacers climbed out of another hole, just as they've done all season.

Now they have home-court advantage in their playoff series with the Boston Celtics.

Miller scored 28 points and the Pacers beat the Celtics 82-79 Monday night two days after he had just seven points in a 102-82 loss in the opener of their playoff series.

``After what happened in Game 1, we all knew he would come back in a big way,'' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said after they tied the series 1-1. ``He is the guy you want on your team this time of year. We'll keep riding him as long as we can.''

The best-of-seven series shifts to Indiana on Thursday night for Game 3.

Miller plans to retire after the season, but still had a big shot left in his 39-year-old body. He sank a running jump shot with 37 seconds to go from 17 feet for the game's final points after deciding to forgo a 3-point attempt when he saw Ricky Davis running at him.

Rockets Now 2-0 Against Mavericks

Yao Ming made 13 of 14 shots, but Tracy McGrady was the hero. McGrady made the last basket of the Rockets' 113-111 win at Dallas.

Yet as much as Tracy McGrady dazzled, it was the clutch baskets by his supporting cast that showed why the Houston Rockets feel so good about their playoff chances.
McGrady scored the majority of his 34 points while the Rockets were building a big early lead, then Mike James and Jon Barry made it hold up in the fourth quarter, preserving a 98-86 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in Game 1 of their first-round series Saturday.
``I feel this is my time,'' said McGrady, who also had six assists and five rebounds. ``I'm more confident than ever and I've got my team feeling the same way.''
McGrady has never made it out of the first round in his career, going 0-for-4 and stung most by a blown 3-1 lead in his last postseason, two years ago in Orlando. This is his first season on the Rockets, who have been bounced in the opening round their last three playoffs. They last won a series in 1997, when the lineup featured Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and Charles Barkley.
This season's mix of McGrady, center Yao Ming and a bunch of hardscrabble veterans already was thinking big. A solid victory -- and a team history of being 17-1 when winning Game 1 of a series -- has them even more excited. Game 2 is Monday night in Dallas.

Pistons Beat Sixers In The Opener, 106-85

For the first time since the season opener, Rasheed Wallace strutted into The Palace with the boxing-style championship belts he had made for the Detroit Pistons.
Then the demonstrative forward showed how he plans to help the Pistons defend their title.
Wallace scored 24 of his 29 points in the second half Saturday, helping Detroit pull away from the Philadelphia 76ers 106-85 in the first game of the NBA playoffs.
``There's no pressure on us. Most of the attention is on Miami and San Antonio,'' he said. ``We like being on the back burner.''
The Pistons went from Eastern Conference contenders to champions after dealing reserves and No. 1 picks for Wallace just before the trading deadline last season. He gave the Pistons just what they needed with his inside-outside scoring, defense and swagger.
``You've got to know Sheed to know the intangibles he brings,'' said Philadelphia's Chris Webber, a former teammate of Wallace's. ``You can tell what a difference he makes on their team.''

Shaq Lost 15 lbs., May Not Play Game 1 Against Nets

Saying his bruised right thigh still hampers his mobility, Miami center Shaquille O'Neal returned to practice Saturday -- yet was coyly noncommittal about whether he'll be playing when the Heat open their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against the New Jersey Nets.
O'Neal was injured a week ago and hadn't been on the court since. Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said he expects O'Neal, who missed the last two regular-season games, to play in Sunday's Game 1 against the Nets.
The 12-time All-Star sounded less certain.
"You've got to start off in the right way," O'Neal said. "I've never missed a playoff game, I don't think. This is the first time where I'm going in iffy-iffy."
O'Neal still is undergoing multiple treatments daily to alleviate pain and swelling in the leg. If O'Neal cannot play, then former Nets center Alonzo Mourning -- who asked out of New Jersey since he did not consider the team to be a championship contender -- is Miami's probable starter.
"Feeling pretty good. Went hard today," said O'Neal, who averaged 22.9 points and 10.4 rebounds in his first season with the Heat. "The true test is going to be how I feel when I wake up in the morning. ... I'll most likely be out there tomorrow unless I come in and I can't walk. Hopefully that's not the case."
O'Neal's health has been a big source of concern for the Heat of late. He missed 5½ of the team's final eight games, first because of a stomach virus that caused him to shed 15 pounds, then the thigh injury.

Knicks, Lakers, Timberwolves and Cavaliers: All After Phil Jackson

Knicks president Isiah Thomas isn't the only NBA executive who needs to hire a new coach. And he isn't the only one who wants to make a run at Phil Jackson.
Thomas will meet with Jackson, who's won nine NBA championships, sometime in the next 10 days.
Jackson had intimated before Lenny Wilkens' resignation in January that he would be interested in coaching the Knicks, the team for which he played in the late 1960s through much of the 1970s.
Thomas said Thursday he wouldn't have a problem working in concert with Jackson, who coached the Chicago Bulls in the early '90s when Thomas and the Detroit Pistons were their biggest rivals.
"I can work with anybody that wants to win," Thomas said.
The Knicks, Lakers, Timberwolves, and Cavaliers are all considered to be interested in hiring Jackson.

Inday Tikay's Practical Tips for Job-seekers! {",

Essentials of a Good Application Letter and other Tips:

1. Always use paper made of good material.( Avoid onion-skin and newsprint, pls.)

2. Write the letter yourself...remember, if your speaking/verbal proficiency does not 'match' your writing skills, this will say much about your sincerity and credibility.

3. Use only one side of the paper (not back-to-back, pls.)

4. Address the application letter appropriately: ideally, to the 'receiving officer' (one who makes the decisions whether to hire or not), or to the Human Resources Officer. Pls make the effort to find out the full name and address of the company, and the CORRECT spelling and title/designation of the person you are addressing your letter to.

5. Type the letter NEATLY and observe proper margins: normally there should be more margin at the bottom than at the top.

6. Arrange your paragraphs systematically; be concise, yet, 'interesting' and if you're working, NEVER use your company's letter head for your application letter.

7. Write a letter that stimulates enough interest and curiousity and creates a desire in the employer to see you personally.

8. 'Sound' friendly and courteous in your letter...this induces a feeling of goodwill and friendliness in the prospective employer.

9. Be honest, yet, modest in writing about your qualifications --- without boasting or under-rating.

10. Observe basic rules in grammar, spelling and punctuation in writing your letters ALWAYS.

11. Your letter should describe YOURSELF, your personality, and should be specific. The descriptions you write should not apply to any other person who may have similiar qualifications or experience, or to someone you 'wish you were'.

12. Be brief, without losing facts at the cost of brevity: highlight your strengths and 'assets' whilst honestly admitting your 'weak points' (i.e., undergraduate, underboard, few or no work experience) and assuring the prospective employer that you are willing to learn and willing to be trained.

13. Use headings, capital words and underline important words and phrases to highlight your application. (Remember, the one reading your letter may not have the luxury of time.)

14. Show your confidence in being able to handle the job efficiently through your letter's tone.

15. Give your reason for wanting to leave your current employer, without resorting to making remarks that may create unfavorable reaction from the reader, or which might be misconstrued or misunderstood.

16. Use only envelopes made of good material, and ideally, it should 'match' the material of your letter.

17. Never use carbon copies or mass-produced/photocopied letters...make the effort to write each letter separately, and send only original copies.

18. Apply for a job for which you believe you possess the required qualifications and where you may be interested, even remotely. ( Do not waste time applying for a position/job for which you know you are not qualified for, or are not interested in.)

19. Prepare yourself for any interviews you might have to appear in and try to go through each interview with an open mind. Every interview adds to your wisdom and experience; there is always something new to learn, and these information/experiences may help you finally get a good job subsequently.

20. Looking for a job is like 'selling yourself"...so the way you 'package yourself' could very well make or break your success!

Trust in what you can do, in what you can achieve and in what you can contribute/share...yet, always be humble in admitting that yes, there is still so much out there that needs to be learned, and to be unlearned!

GOOD-LUCK, Kapamilya!!! {",

The Good, Mad and the Great Martin Nievera Is Back!

Makikita na ulit si Martin Nievera every Sunday sa ABS-CBN! "The big news is that I'm semi-back on ASAP. Only because that's been my promise to the station. I don't know if there's any artist in ABS CBN who's been here as long as I have without a contract, some thing that's kind of unheard of. So it's never really been about the deal or money or I would be in another station, cause I've been offered a lot by another station. I'm one of the true believers of this station, through good times and through bad. My offer has always been every time I'm in town, I can be one of their male hosts if need be. If they don't need me it's cool. It's not about money, it's not about price or my fee but I'm a true believer that ASAP has started many shows and me being one of the pioneers or one of the letters in the acronym ASAP, I thought of the title, it's nice that they still consider me as one of the family, kapamilya talaga."

Pope Benedict XVI: Quotes

On Pope John Paul II:
"We can be sure our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the father's house, that he sees us and blesses us."
"Today we bury his remains in the earth as a seed of immortality. Our hearts are full of sadness, yet at the same time (full) of joyful hope and profound gratitude."
_ homily during Pope John Paul II's funeral on April 8, 2005.
___
Faith:
"Having a clear faith, based on the creed of the church, is often labeled today as a fundamentalism. ... Whereas relativism, which is letting oneself be tossed and 'swept along by every wind of teaching,' looks like the only attitude acceptable to today's standards.
"We are moving toward a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as for certain and which has as its highest goal one's own ego and one's own desires."
_ homily delivered at Mass hours before the beginning of the conclave that would elect him pope, April 18, 2005.
___
Islam:
"It is true that the Muslim world is not totally mistaken when it reproaches the West of Christian tradition of moral decadence and the manipulation of human life. ... Islam has also had moments of great splendor and decadence in the course of its history."
_ from "Ratzinger denies Christianity 'superior' to Islam," Zenit.org via Catholic News, March 6, 2002.
___
Judaism:
"That the Jews are connected with God in a special way and that God does not allow that bond to fail is entirely obvious. We wait for the instant in which Israel will say yes to Christ, but we know that it has a special mission in history now ... which is significant for the world."
_ from Ratzinger's book, "God and the World," published October 2000, as reported by National Catholic Reporter.
"Our Christian conviction is that Christ is also the messiah of Israel. Certainly it is in the hands of God how and when the unification of Jews and Christians into the people of God will take place."
_ from "God and the World," published October 2000, as reported by National Catholic Reporter.
___
Women's ordination:
"The fact that the church is convinced of not having the right to confer priestly ordination on women is now considered by some as irreconcilable with the European Constitution."
_ from Zenit.org, April 11, 2005.
___
Sex abuse scandals:
"In the Church, priests also are sinners. But I am personally convinced that the constant presence in the press of the sins of Catholic priests, especially in the United States, is a planned campaign, as the percentage of these offenses among priests is not higher than in other categories, and perhaps it is even lower.
"In the United States, there is constant news on this topic, but less than 1 percent of priests are guilty of acts of this type. The constant presence of these news items does not correspond to the objectivity of the information nor to the statistical objectivity of the facts."
_ from "Cardinal Ratzinger Sees a Media Campaign Against Church," Zenit.org, December 3, 2002.
"I think the essential point is a weakness of faith."
_ from an interview with EWTN news director Raymond Arroyo in August 2003 as reported by Zenit.org, Aug. 24, 2003.
___
Celibacy:
"We have such difficulty understanding this renunciation today because the relationship to marriage and children has clearly shifted. To have to die without children was once synonymous with a useless life: The echoes of my own life die away, and I am completely dead. If I have children, then I continue to live in them; it's a sort of immortality through posterity. ...
"The renunciation of marriage and family is thus to be understood in terms of this vision: I renounce what, humanly speaking, is not only the most normal but also the most important thing. I forgo bringing forth further life on the tree of life, and I live in the faith that my land is really God — and so I make it easier for others, also, to believe that there is a kingdom of heaven. I bear witness to Jesus Christ, to the Gospel, not only with words, but also with this specific mode of existence, and I place my life in this form at his disposal."
_ from "Salt of the Earth: Christianity and the Catholic Church at the end of the Millennium: An interview with Peter Seewald," by Ratzinger, San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 1997.
"... Celibacy is not a matter of compulsion. Someone is accepted as a priest only when he does it of his own accord."
_ from same.
___
Homosexuality:
"Although the particular inclination of the homosexual person is not a sin, it is a more or less strong tendency ordered to an intrinsic moral evil, and thus the inclination itself must be seen as an objective disorder."
_ from Ratzinger's "Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons," 1986, as reported by National Catholic Reporter.
"It is deplorable that homosexual persons have been and are the object of violent malice in speech or in action. Such treatment deserves condemnation from the church's pastors wherever it occurs. ... The intrinsic dignity of each person must always be respected in work, in action and in law."
_ from same.
"Above all, we must have great respect for these people who also suffer and who want to find their own way of correct living. On the other hand, to create a legal form of a kind of homosexual marriage, in reality, does not help these people."
_ from "Cardinal Ratzinger on Laicism and Sexual Ethics," Zenit.org, Nov. 19, 2004.
